Practical ideas for hair and beauty salon owners An initiative of ES Content

Why you should never drop your prices

And how to value your work instead. A message for every hair and beauty salon owner who wants to grow with confidence.

It’s tempting. A new salon opens nearby with cheaper prices, or a client says “I found it cheaper somewhere else.” The instinct is to match or undercut. But the most successful salon owners know that lowering prices is almost never the answer.

Your skill has real value

Years of training, continuous education, the ability to consult properly, and consistently delivering beautiful results: these things are not free. When you reduce your prices just to compete, you send the message that your expertise is interchangeable. It’s not.

Lower prices attract the wrong clients

Clients who only book because of a discount are usually the least loyal. They will leave the moment someone else offers a slightly better deal. The clients who stay (and refer their friends) are the ones who appreciate quality, experience and the overall experience you create.

What successful salons do instead

  • Price based on time, skill level and product cost, not on what the salon down the road charges
  • Clearly communicate the value: longer-lasting results, healthier hair and skin, a more personalised experience
  • Create packages or memberships that feel exclusive rather than discounted
  • Raise prices gradually once or twice a year and explain the reason (new techniques, better products, higher demand)

A simple mindset shift

Instead of asking “How low can I go?”, start asking “What result am I delivering and what is that worth?” When you believe in the value of your work, your clients feel it too.

Your chair and your treatment room are not a discount store. It’s a place where people come to feel confident and looked after. Price accordingly.
